Air Cargo APAC Joins High-Level Discussions at Global Smart Logistics Summit 2024

Dmitry Kulish, General Manager at Air Cargo APAC, attended the Global Smart Logistics Summit held on September 11, 2024, at the Cainiao headquarters in Hangzhou. The annual summit, hosted by Cainiao, Alibaba Group's logistics subsidiary, gathered over 1,000 participants, primarily consisting of potential and existing customers, alongside influential industry leaders and global logistics experts.
The summit featured insightful keynote speeches and high-level panel discussions, including a notable video message from Joe Tsai, Executive Vice Chairman and co-founder of Alibaba Group, and a live presentation by Lin Wan, CEO of Cainiao.

Key Takeaways from the Summit:

Globalization: Despite changes in the global landscape, globalization continues to advance. China remains a pivotal player, driving significant international trade and logistics developments.

Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI has become integral in logistics, encompassing big data, analytics, predictive forecasting, and autonomous transport solutions. Cainiao is set to heavily invest in AI capabilities to revolutionize smart logistics.

Customer Priority: The industry must consistently adapt and respond to evolving customer demands. Keeping customer needs central is critical to achieving sustained success.

Cainiao Opens Network: Cainiao announced plans to explore opportunities within open markets, extending their extensive logistics network beyond AliExpress and inviting third-party collaborations.

Additional highlights from the summit included Cainiao's notable achievements, such as the successful establishment of a 5-day delivery service covering 14 key countries, primarily in the US and Western Europe. Cainiao's robust domestic infrastructure positions it for international expansion, where additional infrastructure improvements are anticipated.

Significant industry insights shared at the event indicated that 90% of global e-commerce shipments are managed by just ten major express operators, with China currently dominating 37% of all global e-commerce shipments as of 2023—a figure expected to increase further in 2024.
Current market standings revealed at the summit highlighted the top global e-commerce platforms, with Amazon leading at 24%, followed by Alibaba at 16%, Shein at 9%, Temu at 7%, and eBay at 7%. Alibaba also reported substantial growth, with export volumes increasing by 10.5% in the first half of 2024 and anticipated continued growth through 2025.

Cainiao's continued expansion includes plans for additional e-commerce logistics hubs beyond their current facilities in Hong Kong (HKG), Kuala Lumpur (KUL), and Liège (LGG), although new locations have yet to be announced.
